Description: View of the Ohio State Office Building taken from City Hall on West Broad Street, Columbus, ca. 1933. The Scioto River and Town Street bridge are seen on the right side of the photograph. Groundbreaking for the Ohio State Office Building took place on November 19, 1929. The building, located at 65 South Front Street in downtown Columbus, took the site of 34 businesses. Designed by architects Harry Hake, Frank Bail and Alfred Hahn, it is noted as an excellent example of architecture from the Art Deco period. Construction began on October 31, 1930, and the cornerstone was laid on May 16, 1931. After damage from an explosion on April 14, 1932, the building eventually opened on March 27, 1933. Cement steps lead to the front door. Two women appear to be leaving the post office, and a man is walking up the front steps towards the building. Snow covers the sidewalk, ground, and bushes. The Anti-Saloon League was headquartered in Westerville, Ohio, and sent out so much mail in the early twentieth century that Westerville became the smallest town in the United States to have a first class post office. Description: This engraving portrays High Street, Columbus, Ohio, ca. 1830. The street is wide and unpaved. The buildings on the right are the Neil House and the American Hotel. On the left is shown the United States Court House, the State Offices, and the Statehouse (third building on the left). A busy street then as now, High Street is shown to have many pedestrians as well as horse-drawn carriages and riders on horseback. The right side of the street, which includes the hotels, includes many buildings with awnings. The caption at the bottom of the image reads: "High Street, Columbus. On the right is seen the Neil House and the American Hotel; on the right, the U.S. Court House, the State Offices and State House." Made of stone and brick, the Statehouse in this image was constructed in 1816. The State Office building was built of brick with sandstone trim. The exterior of the Statehouse deteriorated badly, and in 1839 the cornerstone of the current Statehouse was laid. However, construction of the new Statehouse was not finished until 22 years later. The original Statehouse in Columbus burned on February 1, 1852. View on Ohio Memory.

This photograph ca. 1935-1943 is of the U.S. Post Office located at 150 North Limestone Street, Springfield, Ohio 45501. Construction began on this Art Deco style building in 1934 and has several murals by artist Herman Henry Wessel. In the 1970's these mural were covered up during energy conservation remodeling on the building, but in 2009, restoration began to restore these murals and the two story skylight.
